Speeding has been a contributing factor in approximately 25-30% of fatal crashes over the past ten years. NHTSA early-estimates for 2021 project the highest number of fatalities since 2005, with a 5% increase in speeding fatalities.

To assist state highway safety offices and law enforcement in developing strategies and campaigns to combat speed related crashes, NHTSA will develop social norming speeding ads to be released nationally from July 20 to August 14 to bring awareness of the dangers of speeding in hopes of reducing the number of speeding-related crashes.

This webinar will raise awareness of these social norming ads to the LEL community and share information to reduce the number of speeding related crashes. States are also encouraged to elevate the awareness of the Social Norming ads by inviting Highway Safety advocates, SHSOs and Law enforcement to leverage the Social Norming Ads at those levels.

The webinar will also highlight the work the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Polices has put into developing Illinois Speed Awareness Day. Since 2016, Speed Awareness Day has been a combined statewide effort involving public and private stakeholders partnering to address the issue of excessive speeding on Illinois roadways and the deadly impact speeding has on traffic safety. The initiative was suspended with the onset of COVID19 and is being reinstated in 2022 as a NHTSA Region 5 enforcement effort.

Finally, Region 4 LELs will highlight their efforts in combating speeding in the southeast with Operation Southern Slow Down.

Panelists will include:

  • Elizabeth Nilsson, Marketing Specialist, NHTSA Office of Consumer Information
  • Jim Wolf, LEL, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police
  • Steve Dilliard, Senior LEL, Tennessee Highway Safety Office
  • Roger Hayes, Director Law Enforcement Services, Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety
  • Brent Kelly, Special Programs Manager, LEL, South Carolina DPS/Office of Highway Safety
