In 2016, 37,461 people were killed in motor vehicle-related incidents, a 5.6% increase from the previous year. Fatalities rose in 40 of 53 U.S. states and territories, and in nine of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 10 regions.
