The value and impact of accurate and complete crash data to identify and address traffic safety issues is well-known. In addition to the collection of fatal crash data, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gathers information from around the country found in thousands of crash reports, randomly selected from law enforcement agencies in areas that reflect variations in geography, population, and miles driven in the United States. Cooperation from law enforcement agencies is critical in selecting crashes to be studied and Law Enforcement Liaisons can play a significant role in supporting this effort and sharing information with law enforcement. The September LEL Webinar will feature John Brophy, Chief of NHTSA’s Crash Investigations Division, who will provide an overview of how the division’s programs work, the types of information that are gathered, and how LELs can help support this critical data collection.
