Millions of vehicles on the road right now have open safety recalls, which put drivers and their passengers at risk. The challenge for safety advocates is how to get the word out so that the public will begin to make a habit of checking their vehicles for open recalls and then to have them bring vehicles in for necessary repairs. Panelists will discuss the safety issues posed by open recalls, challenges in outreach to key communities, and the partnership between the Governors Highway Safety Association and Check To Protect to provide law enforcement agencies with toolkits comprising materials officers can use at community events, in stations, at car seat checks, and during other activities to help spread the word. Attendees will hear the results of the partnership’s pilot project in Texas and how their state can become involved in the next round of law enforcement toolkit distribution.

Panelists:

  • Kil-Jae Hong, Marketing Specialist, Office of Communications and Consumer Information, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
  • Tom Musick, Program Manager, Transportation Safety, National Safety Council
  • Lieutenant Mike Parson, Irving Police Department
